Aviation’s Relationship with Motorsports

Motorsport racing is a common interest among National Aviation Academy’s students and for obvious reasons – they’re hands-on gear heads! The world of motorsports offers a range of vehicles and elements, including aviation. Check out the below list of events and start making plans!

The STIHL National Championship Air Races is the fastest motorsport on earth! View the website’s racing gallery and you’ll find aircraft that can reach up to 500 mph. Race Classes include Formula One, Sport, Unlimited, Jet, Biplane, and T-6 Class.

The US Navy Blue Angels is a team of 16 career-oriented volunteer officers who specialize in aircraft maintenance, administration, medicine, public affairs, and supply fill support positions. Their mission is to inspire a culture of service and excellence through incredible and fierce fighter jet flight demonstrations!

The Drone Racing League is a new global profession for elite drone pilots. Custom made drones can fly upwards of 90 mph through the most complex courses in physical and virtual competitions.

The Air Race E will be the first-ever all-electric airplane race, and the first series of races will take place in 2022! This racing event is opening possibilities for future developments in electric aviation. Spectators can expect speeds of 250+ mph!

The Airspeeder is the world’s first flying car racing series! This is an entirely new motorsport and events are yet to be scheduled. It’ll be interesting to see how these innovative vehicles revolutionize motorsports and the world of aviation.

The 16th Annual Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

The annual formula-one motorsport tradition will take place this weekend in the streets of our destination city, St. Petersburg! This is the final race for the NTT IndyCar series with a championship on the line between two drivers, Scott Dixon and Joseph Newgarden.

Sections of downtown will be closed off for the temporary 1.8-mile circuit, 14-turn configuration using the streets circling Pioneer Park, the Duke Energy Center for the Arts, The Dali Museum, and leading onto the runways at Albert Whitted Airport, which faces the waterfront of Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg Harbor and Marina.
